TALENTED teen golf prodigy Robbie Muir ended a marathon day by capturing his second Troon Links Championship in hugely impressive fashion.

The 18-year-old former Marr College pupil became the youngest player ever to win the event two years ago and on Saturday, he regained it by defeating Troon Welbeck ace Sam Findlater 3&2 in what was an entertaining match played in near-perfect conditions.

It was remarkably his FIFTY SECOND hole of the day, after he competed in the Tennant Cup at nearby Glasgow Gailes earlier in the day, missing the cut.

Robbie, from Troon said: “I played in the Tennant Cup for the first time but didn’t do so well. It’s a great feeling to win it. It was good,we halved the first, I won the second and was never down after that. The key to my success was holing putts on the front nine especially.

“At the ninth I sunk a good long putt and I holed a couple of birdies. The course was great as ever. My target all week was to win the event but the target was to win it.

“I have had a year out and am playing golf and doing a bit of caddying.”

The former Marr College pupil has two major challenges coming up and will be hoping to continue his impressive progress.

He said: “I am playing in the Cameron Corbett Vase in a couple of weeks and at the end of July I will be lining up in the Scottish Amateur Championship which is being played at Blairgowrie, which is a good course."

First-time finalist Findlater (26) from Mossblown could take positives from his performance and said: "I enjoyed playing in the final, it was a good competition, I beat former winner Michael Smyth in the quarter-finals and that was a good win.

"I have won the Club Championship at Welbeck last year and in 2012 so I know I can win if can play well. Robbie putted a lot better than me and that was the key o his success."

Added the beaten finalist: “I will come back next year and give it another go.”
