AYR United sponsor Calvin Ayre gave his beloved club a cash boost on Wednesday to help them bring in new players ahead of two crucial cup ties inside the next month.
Calvin Ayre, the flamboyant founder of the world's largest online betting brand, Bodog, who earlier this year decided to sponsor his ancestral home town's football club has taken things a step further with a cash injection to bolster Ayr United ahead of two big Cup games inside the next ffew weeks.
Ayr United have upset no less than three Scottish Premier League teams to reach the semi-finals of the Scottish Communities Cup against bitter local rivals Kilmarnock and have also made the Fifth round of the Scottish FA Cup.
The last four showdown is on January 28 with the Scottish Cup clash with Falkirk a week later, and Calvin has dipped into his own pocket to help the team, allowing manager Brian Reid to go out and bolster his team.
Calvin said: "I've had so much support from the people of Ayr since I took the sponsorship and for the team to have got so far in both Cups is a very unexpected bonus. I would love to see The Honest Men reach the final and am prepared to invest a bit more in the club to see if we can do just that."
Hugh Cameron, Commercial Director Ayr United, added: "Its been a rollercoaster of a season for us so far but the buzz around the city when BodogBrand signed up with the club and Calvin came to visit has been electric. This latest gesture is fantastic for the fans and the club in general."
Ayr United boss Brian Reid this week welcomed the news of financial backing from shirt sponsor Bodog.
He said: "I am absolutely delighted with any kind of support I can get and really appreciate it.
"We had set some money aside anyway for players, but this will help us strengthen the squad."
The manager confirmed that he hoped to sign two Blackpool Under-19 players, Liam Tonsett and Adam Dodd, within the next week.
With those signings complete he hopes to add at least another two more to the squad during the January transfer window.
