MAGNIFICENT Marr College made history at Dam Park Stadium last Wednesday.

They became the first school team to complete a treble after winning the Ayrshire Schools Under-15 Cup, defeating Largs Academy 6-3 in the final, with striker Joe McInnes scoring four of the goals.

This followed recent successes in the South Ayrshire League and the League Cup.

And the Troon school made it a double on the night, lifting the Ayrshire Schools Under-18 League Cup with a 5-1 triumph against Queen Margaret Academy, with Jamie Martin notching a double on his landmark 18th birthday.

PE teacher Robert McLaughlin, who coaches both sides, said: "I was delighted for Jamie Martin in the Under-18 League Cup final as he scored a double on his birthday and we played really well. It's great for the Under-15 team as it was the first time we have won a double and a treble. This is the first time we have won the League Cup or the Ayrshire Cup."

Asked the secret of their treble-winning team's success, Robert added: "It has been a good year for Troon sport, with Marr Rugby being promoted and the ladies hockey team have also done well.

"We are not a footballing school. The boys just played really well as a team, work so hard for each other and are a testament to what they put into it. They had to come twice from behind as we did in the semi-final against Loudoun. We made two changes at half-time and we wanted more height in midfield and more pace at the back, bringing on Adam Rice and Nairn Calder, who scored two goals. Joe McInnes was outstanding for us. I have had the Under-15s since first year and to come out and win like that is just the cherry on the top."
