TROON 2

BEITH JUNIORS 4

TROON's three-season run in the Super League Premier Division looks set to be coming to an end after a disappointing home defeat to Scottish Cup holders Beith.

The hosts had billed their 20th league game, and final home match as a "must-win" and came out looking much sharper.

Ryan Nisbet showed Beith skipper John Sheridan a clean pair of heels in five minutes, only for Connor McGlinchey to save him.

But the pace and pressing of the exciting Troon front two finally bore fruit in 18 minutes when Dale Moore chased down a supposed "lost cause" only for Beith keeper stand-in keeper Digney to present the Troon man with the gift of an open goal to put the Seasiders ahead.

When Nisbet chased down another through ball only two minutes later history was repeated, as he doubled the lead. A few minutes later Nisbet was through one-on-one, but Digney saved.

In 31 minutes, a neat move between McArthur and Frize saw Calum Watt deliver a dangerous ball across the face of the ball that Ross "Archie" McPherson poked home. An immediate reply was denied to Troon when a Ross Barbour free-kick went wide. Martin Ure was then withdrawn for a knock.

A difference of opinion in the tunnel between Beith manager Johnny Millar and Troon general manager Jimmy Kirkwood was the main talking point as half-time dismissals saw neither man reappear for the second half.

Controversy raged in 58 minutes as referee David Dickinson surprisingly pointed to the spot for what looked like a clean Gavin Collins tackle at the edge of the box. Connor McGlinchey coolly netted.

Beith took advantage of slackness 72 minutes as Calum Watt nipped in to put Beith ahead for the first time.

Troon's hopes of a fightback vanished almost entirely a minute later when Nisbet was given a second yellow card for a mis-timed tackle on Burke.

Late on Beith teenage sub Cammy Elliott slipped past Barbour in injury-time to shoot home.

News of a nine-man Kilbirnie win at Rob Roy leaves the Seasiders requiring an unlikely run of results to avoid relegation.
