Scottish Junior Cup Second Round

TROON 2

STONEYBURN 1

by Matt Speirs

TROON made heavy weather disposing of East Region side Stoneyburn in a match played in terrible conditions.

The early part of the game was pretty even but Troon went ahead in 14 minutes when a Scott McLean corner-kick was headed in at the back post by

Fraser Chisholm.

Two minutes later a shot from Troon's Evan Maley was diverted for a corner.

Troon doubled their lead in 13 minutes when a fine run and cross by McLean was headed into the net at the back post by Steven McCreadie.

Stoneyburn started the second half well and it took a fine save by Jamie McGowan, who turned a shot from Mark Mooney for a corner.

The visitors were on top at this stage and it was no surprise when on the hour they pulled a goal back. A corner-kick from Steven Dick was headed into the net by

Evan Drew.

Midway through the half Adam Forsyth and James Lamont were replaced by Mark Curragh and Dale Shirkie.

Troon regained their two-goal advantage in 70 minutes when a flowing move ended with Tony Murphy setting up Maley who drove the ball into the net.

It was all Troon now and a fine cross by McCreadie was headed wide by Curragh when it looked easier to score.

Three minutes later Scott Chatham had a chance to seal the match but he shot over the bar when well-placed.

Four minutes from time, Stoneyburn's Sean Rider had a chance to pull a goal

back but shot wide with a weak effort.

Twice in the closing minutes Troon should have added goals but efforts by Curragh and Shirkie were scrambled away by the Stoneyburn defence.
