MELROSE 12
AYR 20
REIGNING champions Ayr caused a shock when they brought the leaders' unbeaten record to a surprise end at the Greenyards.
The Millbrae side were worthy winners in the borders as they played some great rugby and bossed much of the match.
Melrose had been leading around the hour. However the momentum totally swung when Rob McAlpine crashed over for a try. The other touchdown was claimed by Stevie Longwell as Ayr enjoyed a dream start to 2018.
Scott Lyle kicked the rest of the points, including a late penalty which put the game beyond the hosts.
Calum Forrester's men will be aiming to build on the success throughout the remainder of the second half of the season.
