Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested and charged in connection with an attempted murder in Prestwick on Sunday morning.

A 50-year-old man sustained serious injuries from the alleged assault that happened around 2.15am on November 18.

Emergency services were called to the scene outside the The Buf on Main Street, Prestwick. The victim was walking with his friend when they came across a disturbance involving two groups of men.

He was reportedly assaulted by one of the men involved and fell back before striking his head on the pavement. He was rushed straight to Ayr hospital for treatment where medical staff described his condition as serious.

Detectives appealed for a suspect described as a white man wearing a white shirt and dark trousers. They are treating the incident as serious assault.

A police spokesperson has now confirmed there has been an arrest: "Police Scotland can confirm that a 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the attempted murder of a 50-year-old man in Prestwick.

"Officers were called to a disturbance in Main Street, Prestwick around 2.15am on Sunday 18 November 2018 where they found a 50-year-old man with serious injuries.

"The 20-year-old man is due to appear before Ayr Sheriff Court today, Wednesday, November 21 and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."
