SPORTS-crazy pupils at Dundonald Primary have been celebrating a successful season this school year by winning titles in a variety of sports

On Friday, June 7, Dundonald’s football team played Crosshouse Primary in the final of the Ayrshire Cup - Dundonald won the match and were delighted to lift the trophy! Following the Ayrshire Cup win, the team played again the following Friday, this time against Symington in the final of the Craigie Cup . . . the thought of the double being almost too good to be true.

Under the direction of their coach, the team stuck to the game plan which had served them well all season: they held their positions, played as a team and grasped their opportunities to score. Although it seemed like the final whistle would never blow - it did - and Dundonald won the match! The double was theirs!

Dundonald football team is therefore the very proud holder of two cups this season: The Ayrshire Cup and the Craigie Cup. From reading the match programs, which provide details of past winners, it looks like Dundonald may be the first team to hold both titles in 19 years!

In addition to the trophies won in football, Dundonald pupils have also achieved great success in other sports this year. Their P4/5 Basketball Team was awarded the first ever Active Schools Spirit of Sport Award earlier in the year, and finished as runners-up in the South Ayrshire final.

The P6/7 Basketball Team also reached the South Ayrshire final, winning the tournament and retaining the trophy for a second successful year.

In Badminton, a duo from Dundonald Primary teamed up with Kingcase to play in the South Ayrshire final, and won the trophy.

Over 60 pupils from Dundonald Primary participated in the Ayrshire Orienteering Championships, achieving great success, with the P6/7 girls’ team winning the shield.

Each year, all pupils from P5-7 in Dundonald have the opportunity to learn to play indoor and outdoor bowls, supported by an excellent team of volunteers from Dundonald Bowling Club. This year, the coaching resulted in a win for the pupils in the traditional Cluny Cup, which is played against a team of staff. In addition to this, Dundonald’s pupil team also went on to win the South Ayrshire Bowling final, which was played at Northfield Bowling Green in Ayr.

In addition to the achievements described above, Dundonald pupils have also achieved success as part of local rugby teams and dance schools; as well as individual success in cross country, athletics, swimming, gymnastics, martial arts and dancing.

Pupils, parents and staff are extremely proud of this year’s achievements and look forward to a busy year of sport next session.
