Looking Out For Each Other – Ayr is a Facebook group for locals requiring extra assistance amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The group acts as a community support structure for locals struggling in self-isolation. Community champions have been appointed to take responsibility for certain areas and to be a point of telephone contact for anyone who needs it.

Siobhian Brown, Councillor for Ayr west who set up the group, said: “The response has been heart-warming. A lot of vulnerable people aren’t on social media so we want to get the word out to them that this group is available. They can just call on their landline to speak to a friendly voice at the end of the phone. It gives them comfort.”

The group also signposts individuals to South Ayrshire Life for further assistance.

Siobhian said: “One volunteer took responsibility for a block of elderly housing.

“An elderly resident called her and said she didn’t have internet. Our volunteer was able to get South Ayrshire Council’s number for her. The thought of going online must be daunting for some people.”
