MAGNIFICENT Marr College made history in the handball world when they completed a glorious victory to round off a stunning year.

The Troon school lined up in the final Scottish Secondary Schools Championship of the year - the S3-S4 competition at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre.

This was the fifth event in the annual secondary school competitions.

The format of the finals was a series of round robin matches between the teams.

After three hours of competition, it came down to a final between Marr College and Kelvinside Academy, who have been close adversaries throughout all the competitions across the school year.

Both teams had dominated the competition throughout and contained a number of experienced players who also play with local club teams.

Marr College raced off to a good start, gaining a 4-0 lead early in the match but Kelvinside fought back and it ended 6-6.

It then went to penalty shoot-out, with goalkeeper Hamish Quinn making critical saves and scoring a penalty himself.

This completed a very successful year for Marr, in which they won four of the five Secondary School Championships through the school year.

In November they won the girls S4-S6 championship which followed on from a third-place finish for the S1-S3 girls on Active Girls Day in October.

At the start of the year in January, the S1-S2 boys won their championship with the S5-S6 boys becoming champions in February.

This is the most successful year for any secondary school since the championships began in 2010.

It is the culmination of a lot of hard work at the school in partnership with the local Troon Handball Club which started in 2008. It has seen the school become one of the strongest handball schools in Scotland.
