Kyle Academy pupil Duncan McAlister, 16, who suffered from brittle bone disease, had a new wheelchair thanks to generous members of the community, who raised £2,000 for it in 2003. Former Ayr GP Dr James Begg published a book about his time as a Navy doctor with the HMS Gannett search and rescue service. In it, he describes the horror of searching for bodies in the wake of the Lockerbie bombing. In the foreword, Rear Admiral Scott Leadbetter said: “Many people owe their lives to the persistence and tenacity of Jimmy Begg.”
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants from across South Ayrshire played in the Scottish Qualifying Round of a National D of E Golf Competition held in Perthshire. Matthew Rewhorn, from Belmont Academy finished in sixth place and was presented with a prize by HRH Prince Edward, The Earl of Essex.
THE holiday club run in August by Maybole Council of Churches was again a great success. Around 40 children attended each day for lots of fun, games, quizzes, stories, videos, drama and singing.
A group of highly-promising young players from Ayr attended an elite training camp run by the Scottish Rugby Union. Catherine Shennan, seven, came out top at Ballantrae Flower Show in 2003 when she was judged to be one of the winners with this impressive exhibit.
