TEENAGE Prestwick bowling sensation Darren Weir has earned his first call-up for the Scotland national team.

Weir successfully came through a trial at Auchinleck Indoor Bowling Club on Sunday and will now join team-mate and five-time World Indoor Championship winner Paul Foster in the Scottish Indoor Bowling Association team for the Home International Championships at Falcon Bowling Club in Essex from Thursday, March 14 until Saturday, March 16.

Scotland's most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete Alex Marshall, who won gold in the Fours event with Foster on the Gold Coast, is also in the team.

Nineteen-year-old Weir is one of the youngest players to be capped and said: "I have been playing really well this year and helped the Scotland Under-25s team win the Home Internationals in Belfast as well as winning the Under-21 Scottish Singles title.

" That form has carried on throughout the year.

"This is a great honour to represent the full Scotland squad aged only 19. It will be great to be in the team with Paul as I bowl alongside him at Prestwick and he has so much experience.

"It really look forward to the event and hopefully Scotland can do really well. We were runners-up last year and hopefully this time we can go one better and win it."
